POETICS OF FAILURE

POETICS OF FAILURE inspired by Documents of contemporary Art

This book covers: Dissatisfaction and rejection; idealism and doubt; error and incompetence; the experiment and progress.

Artistically | Theoretically | Commercially | Conceptually | Culturally | Logistically – are all in the realm of ‘not knowing’.

Is failure a claim of wrongness that suggests ‘imperfection’.
What is wrong with imperfection?

For me: it is a failure to not see the value or beauty in something. Living with no challenges or curiosity would be a failure. Failure is an act of bravery and courage. Failure is a different direction to the norm. Failure stretches and expands new possibilities of thinking and existing. Failure is a positive move away from Hegemony, from authority and dictatorship.  I see dissatisfaction and rejection as a barometer for improvement or adjustment to progress.

Who is feeling dissatisfied and who is rejecting what?
What is the failure based on and what ideal is being doubted?
Does the author feel they have made the error and feel incompetent of the reader?
What if failure was a temporary route or process to something successful?

The Salon de refuse was a success!

Is failure just a label.
A mistake can be changed and has potential.
Dissatisfaction can be improved.
Failure is an attitude or judgement of something.
My intention is to rely on the potential of something to be born out of it.  To rely on uncertainty, instability and the unexpected.

Failure is a closed negative judgement or attitude to prevent moving out of a comfort zone.

To fail is to be brave of the unknown.

To fail there is a notion of expectation.
Every failure is an opportunity.
Failure is a cul-de-sack.
If there is no certainty with a structure, or stability, then how can you have failure?
Is failure just a label of rejection, a paradox between being vulnerable and brutalised?
How does one measure failure? Or is it just doubt and rejection.

Is failure something you didn’t do, that you set out to do?
What is your strategy to illuminate failure?

Doubt | Anxiety | Fear | Uncertainty | Wrongness of a work |
The un-anticipated - are human processes that open up the potential of failure.

Experimentation and problem solving – are vital to art practice and is a learning process.
